Orange Shirt Day
September 30, 2022
We are wearing orange today at BeConnected in observance of September 30th as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and to commemorate the history and ongoing trauma caused by residential schools. It is now the second year this day is being commemorated as a national day of remembrance in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action #80.
The grassroots initiative began as Orange Shirt Day in Williams Lake as an effort to raise awareness of the residential school system in Canada that forced 150,000 First Nation, Metis, and Inuit children to attend Indian Residential schools. Orange Shirt Day creates opportunities to discuss the history and legacy of residential schools, while also honouring the experiences of survivors, intergenerational survivors, and remembering the children who did not make it home. The educational and awareness principles of this campaign are to affirm that every child matters![]()
